In my post today, I share details of all Purina cat food recalls over the past few years. You will find this article particularly helpful if you love feeding your cat Purina products. The brand has a wide variety of recognizable cat food brands including Purina Pro Plan, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Purina Beyond, Purina Muse, and so much more! The brand is among the best! They have a lot of products and recipes that would make your head hurt trying to find the ideal pick for yo1ur feline.

Nestlé Purina PetCare was born in 2001 after a merger between Ralston Purina which was started by William H. Danforth in 1894 and Nestlé’s Friskies PetCare Company founded in 1985. Both parent brands were successful in the pet food industries where they were based. Merging the two made them stronger and more reliable. They now offer more than 25 product lines with products such as dog food, cat food, pet snacks, dog & cat litter, and animal health products as well. The company has its headquarters in 800 Chouteau Ave, St. Louis, Missouri, US.

Purina Cat Food Recall History

Purina has a long list of recalls for its cat foods and recipes which dates from 1978 all the way to recently, 2019. And while the brand’s historic recalls are intriguing, the site tracks only the recall events that have occurred since around 2005. However, we shall look into all of them, including those that are not remembered.

Check out the table below:

As you can see from the table above, not many brands of the company’s cat foods have been recalled as compared to its competitors. Overall, they are a reliable cat food brand, but that does not mean they get a free pass.

Cat Food that Never Been Recalled

One thing I love about the Purina Cat Food is that they are somewhat free of recalls. So, yes, the Nestlé Purina PetCare has had its fair share of cat food recalls, but not on all brands. Some of its brands that have never been recalled include Purina Gentle cat food, Purina Beyond cat food, Purina Pro Plan cat food, and Purina One Sensitive Systems cat food.

Purina One Cat Food Recalls 2020 and 2021

Purina One cat food line has only had two recalls, one due to risk of salmonella contamination on July 2011 on its Vibrant Maturity 7+ Adult Dry Cat Food. The other one was a short while after the one above, but its details are not well recorded. There are no recalls for Purina One cat food in 2020 or 2021.

Purina One line of products is affordable and has a specific emphasis on your feline’s diet so you can find one that suits his or her needs. It has high levels of protein content in its recipes. Yet, the brand is famous for using controversial ingredients compared to its sisters (Purina Pro Plan & Beyond). Therefore, if your cat is sensitive to some ingredients such as corn or soy, watch out for the recipe you buy.

Purina Gentle Cat Food Recall

While Nestlé Purina PetCare has many cat food recalls over the years, their Purina Cat Chow Gentle cat food has never been recalled

The Purina Cat Chow Gentle cat food is prepared using premium protein and natural prebiotic fiber without artificial colors or additives. This helps support your cat’s digestive health while helping her stay nourished and healthy. If your furry feline friend has a sensitive tummy, try this brand. The formula is available for all life stages.

Purina Beyond Cat Food Recall

Unlike other product lines of the brand that have had multiple recalls, Purina Beyond cat food has never been recalled even once. However, being made from the same facilities means that the brand can also be affected.

The Beyond cat food product line offers dry cat foods, wet cat foods as well as treats that are crafted with zero artificial flavors. They are also guarded by the Traceability Guarantee. These cat foods are only available as grain-free and have two categories including Beyond Indoor and Beyond Wild. This explains why the lineup is cherished with consistent positive client reviews.

Purina One Vibrant Maturity Cat Food Recall

In July 2011, Purina One Vibrant Maturity 7+ adult premium cat food was voluntarily pulled out of the shelves via a press release due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall was on the 3.5 lb. and 7 lb. bags. Humans handling these contaminated products were also at risk. They belonged to a single product that was shipped to clients in 12 states in December 2010.

The One Vibrant Maturity 7+ is crafted with premium ingredients to ensure that your feline friend gets all her nutritional needs to keep her healthy and happy. It has real chicken as the first ingredient and contains no fillers.

Purina Naturals Indoor Cat Food Recall

Yet another cat food in Purina’s Cat Chow product line, the Cat Chow Naturals Indoor Cat food was last recalled in 2011 due to potential salmonella contamination. No other instances have been recorded ever since.

The Purina Naturals line of foods features high-quality cat foods that are very beneficial to your indoor cat’s health. Depending on your cat’s needs, they offer you a choice between original, hairball, healthy weight, and grain-free. All formulas feature meat as the first ingredient and are packed with vitamins, minerals, omegas and omegas for a complete and balanced diet. Check out for corn though.

Purina Pro Plan Cat Food Recall

Unlike the dog food formulas, the Purina Pro Plan cat food has never been recalled which would explain why it features in the list of vet recommended Purina brand’s product lines.

Probably one of the top product lines of Purina cat foods, the Pro Plan uses premium ingredients in its formulas which explain the high price tag. The Purina Pro Plan currently consists of both dry and wet cat foods available in 5 different lines. They include Savor, Focus, Veterinary Diets, True Nature, and Prime Plus.

Purina One Sensitive Systems Cat Food Recall

Although Purina One has had some recalls, their Sensitive Systems cat food has no recalls at all. That and some (not all) good ingredients are what make the formula decent for your feline friend.

If you are looking for a Purina product line that is very close to the Pro Plan and Beyond lines in a significant value, the Purina One is the go-to line. It is formulated with higher protein content than the other two to help promote a healthier lifestyle for cats of all life stages. The Purina One Sensitive Systems cat food particularly is fantastic if your cat has a sensitive tummy. Turkey is the first ingredient.

Purina Cat Food Recall 2018

Purina cat food had no recalls in 2018. As you can see in the review and recall history today, the latest cat food recall on the brand was in 2019 when it voluntarily recalled the Purina Muse’s Natural Chicken Recipe in Gravy for rubber pieces that were spotted in the cat food.

Friskies Cat Food Recall

In June 2011, Purina voluntarily recalled its Friskies brand of cat foods for potential salmonella contamination on 870 bags. The featured product was their Grillers Blend dry cat food product and it is the only time it has been recalled. However, it has been on the wrong side of the FDA in other ways like in 2014 when the FDA wrote a letter after a checkup on the product was done.

The Friskies brand offers a wide range of wet or canned food options, but their wet foods line has a few products. Product lines for cat treats are also available in case you are interested. Friskies started as a Carnation Company brand that diversified to the pet food industry from evaporated milk production in the 1930s. It has 4 major product lines of cat foods.

Wrap-Up

Overall, Purina is a decent cat food brand with a lot of product lines that try their best to meet your cat’s nutritional needs at all life stages. And although they have a long list of recalls, their cat food brands are not culprits as compared to other cat food companies out there. At least there are those that have not been recalled at all. It also tries to use premium ingredients in some recipes Purina, however, is fond of using controversial ingredients in most of its formulas so always remember to read carefully before purchasing.
